Siracusa
Three monuments were sufficient in making Siracusa worthy of being included in the UNESCO sites in 2005 – its Cathedral: a palimpsest monument that originally was a temple devoted to Athena and later became a Christian church; Siracusa’s archaeological area surrounds the ancient Greek theatre that has a classic theatre programme every year; and the Eurialo Castle – the biggest and most complete military complex that dates back to the Hellenic period. But the city of the nymph Aretusa has so many more jewels for the visitor to see: monumental temples and catacombs, paintings and works of art, an extraordinary museum dedicated to the archaeologist Paolo Orsi and fascinating secret places like the Isle of Ortigia.

Le Spiagge di Fontane Bianche.
Siracusa’s beaches start on the coast that is south of the city. Fine white sand beaches and fascinating sea cliffs of which the best are the Plemmirio, Ognina, Fontane Bianche and Arenella – with their crystal clear sea they are also a paradise for those who love fishing and underwater photography.

La Riserva Naturale di Cava Grande.
Wedged in a gorge eroded by the rivers, Cava Grande del Cassibile is certainly an extraordinary and evocative location - in all the Iblean territory there is no other natural environment as stunningly wild and beautiful. The river Cassibile flows through the canyon with its limpid water and along its course, among the rocks, forms small but deep lakes. There is a thick strip of forest along the river banks which is dominated by the oriental sycamore and colourfully splashed by oleander blossoms |
